Start off your day on the right foot
Are you not a morning person? Does it take forever to get out of bed and do you feel more tired when you get up than when you went to sleep? Getting out of bed might be your worst nightmare, but we know how to make it a little bit easier.
Every time you hear the shrill tones of your alarm you feel the urge to smash your phone (or old school alarm clock) against the wall. The annoying sound wakes you up, but it’s not really a nice way to start your day. If you change your alarm to a softer noise that slowly increases in volume and tempo, you will wake up feeling much less frustrated and anxious.
For many people this is the hardest tip, but it is also the most effective. Stop snoozing and get up right away! Those few extra minutes of sleep are not going to make you feel more well rested, in fact, the opposite is true. Snoozing endlessly or hanging out in your bed (scrolling through your phone maybe?) is keeping you in this sleepy state that you won’t be able to shake throughout the day.
If you really can’t get on board with the ‘get up right away’ tip, put your phone or alarm clock on the other side of the room. This way you must get out of bed to turn it off, whether you want to or not. You can start phasing this out as soon as you are used to getting up right away.
You might think: duh… But really, we are not always good at making sure we sleep enough. There are so many shows to binge watch, so many YouTube holes to fall into, you might be going to sleep later than necessary. If you sleep enough, you’ll find that getting up is much easier.
This doesn’t work for everybody, but it does work for me. Wake-up lights simulate the sunrise and wake you up slowly. Slightly before you have to wake up the light will start to turn on and increases in brightness until you really have to get up. Most wake-up lights also have nature sounds instead of a loud alarm sound.
Great, you’ve gotten out of bed. But you still feel tired. A splash of ice cold water in your face will work miracles. It’s not comfortable, but it does get your blood pumping and it clears your eyes and mind.
The most important tip for any sleep or waking related issue is to stick to a routine. Go to bed around the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. Make the process of going to bed and waking up pleasant by structuring it with a nice cup of coffee with breakfast or a shower to wind down.
Hopefully these tips will help you get up in the morning. What are your favorite methods to get out of bed?
